Brief Overview
Sonnenhof operates an animal sanctuary providing veterinary care and housing for rescued animals, with the goal of placing them with adopters. The website manages animal profiles, facilitates adoptions, provides educational resources on animal care, coordinates dog walking programs for rescued dogs, and publishes news about the sanctuary and its events.
Sonnenhof partnered with drunomics to modernize their Drupal 7 platform. The site was migrated to mossbo, a cloud CMS ecosystem that delivers a fully managed SaaS experience while maintaining open source flexibility. The migration utilized mossbo's comprehensive framework, which leverages proven strategies from successfully completed projects, to minimize risk, modernize the platform and preserve existing content and SEO rankings.
Why Drupal was Chosen
With Drupal 7 reaching end-of-life in January 2025, Sonnenhof needed to migrate their existing Drupal site to a supported and secure version. mossbo, built on the open source Lupus Decoupled Drupal project, provided the solution with its decoupled architecture combining Drupal's content management capabilities with Nuxt's frontend flexibility.
A critical requirement was supporting Sonnenhof's non-technical content management team. Drupal's intuitive admin interface and efficient content creation tools provide the necessary user-friendly experience. Additionally, Drupal's continuous evolution and adoption of modern technology ensures the platform remains scalable and sustainable for long-term use with robust security for a worry-free experience.

What Makes This Project Special

At the heart of Sonnenhof is a team united by their love for animals and commitment to sustainable animal welfare. Operating a 30,000 m² sanctuary between Eisenstadt and Siegendorf, they care for approximately 70 dogs, 100 cats, and various small animals, providing veterinary attention and species-appropriate housing while working to quickly connect them with loving adopters.
Sonnenhof's philosophy recognizes that sustainable animal welfare begins with people. While sanctuaries provide essential care, animals ultimately belong with families who can offer them the love and attention they need to thrive. This human-centered approach extends beyond animal care to every aspect of their work, including their digital presence.
This philosophy guided Sonnenhof's partnership with drunomics. As a non-profit without technical resources, Sonnenhof needed a digital solution as sustainable and reliable as their animal welfare mission. drunomics delivered a worry-free platform featuring comprehensive security monitoring, fully GDPR-compliant hosting to strengthen visitor trust, an accessible design system with reusable components, and a robust contact workflow for adoption inquiries. The result is a scalable solution that empowers Sonnenhof's team to focus on what matters most: connecting rescued animals with the loving homes they deserve.
